Sustainable food has a positive impact upon the local economy and the economy of communities that products are imported from, is produced in a way that protects and promotes wildlife and natural resources and has social and cultural benefits. You can choose a more sustainable diet by: Choosing locally produced and seasonal food to reduce energy use in storing and transporting food miles and keep money within the local economy. Eating more fruit, vegetables and carbohydrates and less meat and dairy products to reduce the amount of energy your food uses in production and be healthier. Buying food from producers that have high farming standards such as organic produce that uses less chemicals that can damage the environment and protects animal welfare. Buying ethically traded imported products such as tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas to protect communities and the environment in other countries. Only eating fish species that are not at risk and try to buy from sustainable sources to protect marine biodiversity. Growing, foraging, cooking, baking and preserving your own food for a diet that's great for you and your local environment.
